Quand Alan Cross, commissaire principal à Scotland Yard, débarque dans ce petit port français, alors que la guerre gronde un peu partout (nous sommes en septembre 1938) pour enterrer son patron, cette mort le conduit à Celia Graves, beauté troublante au charme vénéneux et au sourire diabolique.
